Green

Collection name:  Green
Collector: Malcolm Green
Accession number: LIVNP 1999.01

Malcom Green lived in Leicester and in 1992 offered his extensive collection of pipes and pipe related ephemera to the National Pipe Archive.  The collection was built up over a number of years and at the time of acquisition ranked as one of the top ten in the country.  Although it includes offprints, books, pictures, drawings and photographs, it is the pipes which form its heart. These fall in to two main groups: pieces collected locally and pieces which have been purchased.

Green Cabinet
Cabinet containing the bulk of the Green Collection

The local pieces form the smaller of the two groups and many of them were field-walking finds.  They cover a wide date range and are generally rather fragmentary, including some production waste from Leicester.  Despite this, they constitute a valuable record of the local industries and formed the basis of his publication on Leicester pipes

Green, M. (1984) Clay tobacco pipes and Pipemakers of Leicester, Green, Leicester, 55pp. (Two copies held: LIVNP 1997.54.1 and 2006.39.087]

The purchased pieces form by far the largest and most diverse part of the collection, running into several thousand pieces.  They were collected from bottle shows and antiques fairs all over the country and are primarily nineteenth century in date.  The pipes were collected to show the whole range of form and decoration commonly found on both British and continental pieces.  The collection includes quite a number of pipes which are either unique or the best known examples of their type.  Many of the finest pieces have never been broken or buried and the collection as a whole makes an excellent reference source for anyone wishing to study this period.

A large number of these pieces have been acurately drawn by Mr Green and the Archive holds two files containing these drawings, many of which have been coloured.

In addition to the main collection of pipes, there is also a substantial paper archive which includes copies of a number of advertisements and receipts, framed prints, and a range of offprints and trade catalogues such as:-

N. V. Goedewaagen's of Gouda, Holland c. 1912 (LIVNP 1999.01.010)
