McManusCollection name: McManus Having retired in 1982, William (Bill) McManus took on an allotment from the Whitehill Allotment Society in Cambridge. The plot yielded a large number of fragments and although initially the collection was made on his own plot, interest spread among the other allotment holders and permission to collect from other plots was obtained. The site of the allotment is adjacent to Newmarket Road which is a known pipe producing area of Cambridge.
The collection, consisting of some 4, 071 fragments, was acquired by the NPA in February 1996. The vast majority of the collection comprises plain, unmarked stems, which have been sorted by stem bore size (772 x 4/64”; 489 x 5/64”; 784 x 6/64”; 823 x 7/64”; 531 x 8/64” and 40 x 9/64”). There is also a large collection of plain mainly bowls, mainly heel types, from the late seventeenth to early eighteenth century. The rest of the fragments include some mould decorated bowl fragments, mouthpieces, stems with milled decoration and a number of moulded stem marks. The makers represented in the assemblage include members of the Cleaver family; William Balls; William Piggott (or William Prior); James Knight and Francis Hampson. In addition to the pipe fragments a possible bone knife handle was also recovered and has been accessioned into the collection as LIVNP 1997.05.
A number of items from this collection are currently on display at the Victoria Gallery and Museum in Liverpool (http://vgm.liverpool.ac.uk/exhibitions-and-events/permanent/national-pipe-archive/) Key words: clay pipe; Cambridge; Cleaver; Piggott; Prior; Balls; Knight; Hampson
